What is Benzoyl Peroxide?
Benzoyl peroxide is a topical antimicrobial and keratolytic agent used as a first-line treatment for acne vulgaris. This medication is available over-the-counter at NZ pharmacies and funded on prescription.
What is Benzoyl Peroxide Used For?
Benzoyl peroxide is used as a first-line topical treatment for mild to moderate acne vulgaris โ targeting Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) bacteria and reducing comedones.
How Does Benzoyl Peroxide Work?
Benzoyl peroxide acts as an oxidising agent that releases free radical oxygen species in the skin, rapidly killing C. acnes bacteria โ including antibiotic-resistant strains. It also has keratolytic effects, loosening comedone plugs and reducing follicular plugging.
How to Take Benzoyl Peroxide
Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin once or twice daily. Start with a lower concentration (2.5โ5%) to minimise irritation; increase to 10% if well tolerated. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Bleaches fabrics, hair, and bedding โ use white towels and pillowcases.
Common Side Effects of Benzoyl Peroxide
- Skin dryness and peeling
- Stinging and redness
- Bleaching of clothing, towels, and hair (use white linen)
- Skin sensitivity
Serious Side Effects โ Seek Medical Attention
Contact your doctor or call 111 immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Allergic contact dermatitis (uncommon but possible โ stop if severe blistering rash develops)
Drug Interactions
Benzoyl Peroxide may interact with other medicines. Always inform your doctor and pharmacist of all medications you are taking. Key interactions include:
- Tretinoin (apply at separate times to reduce mutual inactivation and irritation)
New Zealand Prescribing Information
Benzoyl peroxide (2.5%, 5%, 10% wash, gel, and cream โ Benzacยฎ and generics) is available OTC and funded on prescription at lower concentrations. It is a key component of evidence-based acne regimens in NZ and is recommended by BPAC NZ as first-line topical treatment. Crucially, benzoyl peroxide does NOT cause antibiotic resistance โ unlike topical antibiotics alone. Using it in combination with topical antibiotics prevents resistance development.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will benzoyl peroxide bleach my clothes?
Yes โ benzoyl peroxide is a bleaching agent that will discolour coloured fabrics, towels, and even hair. Use white or old pillowcases, white towels, and allow the product to fully absorb before dressing. Wash hands after applying.
How long before benzoyl peroxide improves my acne?
Most people see improvement in 4โ8 weeks of consistent use. Because it acts as an antimicrobial, it works on existing spots and prevents new ones forming. Use it consistently as part of a full acne regimen โ clean skin, benzoyl peroxide, and moisturiser with SPF.
